Lighting retrofits are presently the number one energy saving strategy with a frequently rapid return on investment
?The word retrofit is defined as “to install new equipment in something previously manufactured or constructed.” Generally speaking, a lighting retrofit project consists of installing new lamps or bulbs, and ballasts into existing “fixtures”. The fixture itself can have many shapes and sizes and come in a variety of lamp and ballast configurations. In most buildings today, the existing fixtures have been designed to illuminate a certain type of workspace with a pre-determined “amount” of measureable light or lighting level. The quantity and types of fixtures installed to light the space properly was determined by the lighting engineers and based on a number of factors including the existing ceiling heights and the color and reflectance of the walls and floors. A lighting retrofit replaces various components of a lighting system with more energy efficient counterparts.
Lighting upgrades can include any startegy that reduces the system's energy use. Energy savings realized over time can be significant enough to not only pay for itself, but produce a return on investment.
